Down East Saltwater Farm

View of Prospect Harbor from our Farm

Prospect Harbor on the Schoodic Peninsula

You will find Mermaid's Purse Farm on the spectacular Schoodic Peninsula, home of the eastern section of Acadia National Park. We are four miles from the Park entrance. Views are grand; traffic minimal. Our farm is on the edge of the village of Prospect Harbor, one of the busiest of a number of classic small fishing villages on the peninsula, and looks out across the Harbor and out to the Gulf of Maine. Gulls gather over the Cliffside cannery across the water. Resident eagles, osprey and herons fish off the shore, and the area is a prime bird watchers' destination.

The Prospect Harbor Lighthouse, one of a few wooden lighthouses in the country still in use, can be viewed from the shore, a short walk down the road. We are five miles from Winter Harbor, which in August, hosts one of Maine's unique Lobsterboat Races, and is the site of the Grindstone Neck cottage colony, developed by wealthy New Yorkers and Philadelphians in 1889 to rival the now destroyed great cottages of Bar Harbor. Summer residents maintain a yacht club and an 18 hole golf course, which is open to the public..

We are long walk (3 miles) from Corea by the Sea, a short ride from the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge, and not far from unique Jasper Beach. Prospect Harbor is host to the annual Schoodic Arts Festival and a variety of art and craft galleries can be found on any road in the vicinity. Access to Bar Harbor by ferry is five miles away, There are excellent restaurants in Winter Harbor, and Birch Harbor, as well as a lobster pound less than 10 minutes away.

The Farm makes a great home base for trips north and south, for sea kayaking and canoeing, for sightseeing, shopping, or just relaxing. See for yourself.
